Do you speak Ume Sami?

Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Sami are national minority languages in Sweden.

Pupils belonging to any of the national minorities have the right to mother tongue instruction, regardless of whether it is a living language at home or not. This means that the pupil has the right to study the language even if it is a beginner's language.

The municipality of Umeå WANTS MORE when it comes to the development of teaching in the national minority languages, with a particular focus on preschool and younger children. A longer development project is underway with the aim of finding successful language models for teaching in and on the national minority language for both first and second language learners.

We are now looking for someone who wants to contribute to our students continuing to develop their language, culture, and identity!

Employment Form

The position is a temporary contract starting from 2026-02-02 until 2026-06-17. If you have the opportunity for in-person teaching, we offer a part-time employment rate of 20%. If you are instead interested in remote teaching, we offer a part-time employment rate of 10%.

Your Responsibilities

As a mother tongue teacher, you will teach students from preschool to grade 9 together with other mother tongue teachers. The teaching consists of 120 minutes per week and follows the Swedish curriculum.

The following tasks may be included in the role:

• Plan, implement, and follow up on teaching in the relevant language
• Assess and grade in accordance with applicable governing documents
• Teach students both in-person and through remote teaching (if necessary)
• Contribute to the development of teaching based on our guiding principles: language, culture, and identity
• Collaborate with colleagues within our Language Hub for national minority languages

Teaching takes place at the student's home school from preschool to grade 3. From grade 4, teaching may be at another school – we offer bus passes if needed. Remote teaching may occur from grade 2, especially in rural areas.

About You

We are looking for someone who is creative, self-driven, and flexible, and who thrives in a dynamic work environment. Furthermore, you have good collaboration skills, are attentive, and can communicate and handle different situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. Requirements

• Good knowledge of Ume Sami in spoken and written form
• Approved Swedish B/Swedish 2
• Good digital skills
• Pedagogical education and/or pedagogical experience
• Valid extract from the criminal record, in accordance with the law on suitability checks

Meritorious

• Knowledge of additional languages
